All Star Code at SXSW

On March 11, All Star Code’s Founder and Executive Director, Christina Lewis Halpern will be a key speaker and panel moderator at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. The session is entitled Cracking the Codes: Why Black & Latino Boys Matter.

Christina will be accompanied by Marisa Renee Lee, Managing Director of My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (MBKA) and Marcus Mitchell, Senior Engineer Director at Google. She will be part of a session, which answers the questions:

    Why are some boys falling behind in the 21st century economy?
    What are the consequences of a diversity debt within a startup?
    And how are boys’ needs different from those of girls?

Though the exciting interactive panel, Christina, Marisa and Marcus will be providing insight into the projected deficit of highly skilled workers in the US. By 2020,123 million highly skilled jobs will be available with only 50 million workers with the skills to fill them!

Boys of color in the US will soon be roughly 25% of those entering the workforce. The panelists will discuss how investing in these boys across the US, is an overlooked opportunity and can affect a business’ bottom line.

Christina will take the audience through the exciting movement of closing the opportunity gap for Black and Latino boys across the country with a unique focus on tech sector. All Star Code is very excited for this upcoming event and I hope to see you there!

Farewell from Managing Director Robert Bonner

Dear All Star Code Friends, Family and Alumni,

Happy September!

As the new school year begins, many new experiences await our alumni. Some are finally off to college! We wish these students much success, and deserved confidence, as they make this major life transition. The new crop of 2015 Summer Intensive alumni are returning to their high schools genuinely transformed from a one-of-a-kind summer experience. Judging from updates on their Facebook group, they are looking forward to building their tech skills through ASC’s Accelerator Program. I wish each of these young men continued success as they embark on this new leg of their exciting journey!

I also want to give you, members of our tech-education ecosystem, an update on something that’s been developing for me at All Star Code. Now that our 2nd Summer Intensive has ended so successfully, All Star Code is in a better position than ever to grow in New York City – and to scale beyond.

Having helped build the foundations of All Star Code, I am transitioning out of my role as Managing Director. I share this news with an obvious mix of sadness and excitement. There is never an opportune time to leave a train moving as fast as All Star Code. But change becomes more difficult once the organization begins accelerating again in the new school year.

I have helped establish the organization’s very foundations and presence in the tech education space. Indeed, these years of hard work have been nothing short of phenomenal! All Star Code now has many key elements in place — a solid core team, a unique program and curriculum, a financial structure, a budget, 501(c)(3) status, a strategic plan, nearly 60 alumni and a one-of-a-kind reputation. Students, parents, and schools love All Star Code. And rightly so! Moreover, ASC also enjoys an ecosystem of professional mentors, tech partnerships and sponsorships that are truly enviable. I came on board to help set up all of this. I succeeded, and am proud of these accomplishments.

Now that these things are in place, I am moving on to other opportunities and challenges. Christina and the (growing) team will nimbly handle the impending expansion phase! Much love to this growing work on behalf of our boys of color. Their lives truly matter.

I will be moving on to consulting opportunities within the non-profit and tech education spaces. I want to find ways to leverage all that I have achieved and learned up to this point to continue my service to our young people of color. I will also revive my work as an executive and leadership coach. This is my primary passion: helping others to find their professional pathways and to excel. As you can see, All Star Code’s mission has been an obvious example of this work.

Please let’s keep in touch. I’d love to keep each of you as a valued member of my professional network, with obvious overlaps to All Star Code’s. But I would most want to keep you as allies and friends.

And to the students: I am always here as a supportive mentor. If you’ve learned nothing over the past two years, know this. So don’t hesitate to reach out at bonnersuter@gmail.com!

AT&T Aspire Awards 7 All Stars with Scholarship Award

Seven students from All Star Code were named AT&T Scholars, as part of a scholarship program AT&T is funding in order to educate, inspire and equip high school boys of color with the skills to pursue careers in tech. The seven students, most of which are from the New York City area will serve for the next year as All Star Code Ambassadors. They will have the opportunity to network with industry professionals and receive free laptops and other supplies. Students were selected based on a combination of leadership, positivity, work ethic and a demonstrated desire to learn and apply classroom concepts.

“Confident, qualified young men of color who are ready to enter STEM careers are essential to the future of our business and our community,” said Marissa Shorenstein, New York State President of AT&T. “All Star Code works to grow the field and we are thrilled to support the program and our AT&T scholars.”

“Our boys are a tremendous pool of untapped talent. Teaching them to code is an investment that has unlimited potential return, whether in new ideas and innovation or increased economic opportunity, and we’re tremendously excited to have AT&T’s help in fostering the next generation of tech pioneers,” said Christina Lewis Halpern, Founder and Executive Director of All Star Code.

The seven All Star Code/AT&T Scholars are:

• Anand Karmaker, a rising junior at High School for Math, Science and Engineering. He lives in the Bronx.
• De Andre King, a rising senior at Urban Assembly Gateway School for Technology. He lives in Queens.
• Uzair Vawda, a rising junior at William Cullen Bryant High School. He lives in Queens.
• John Abreu, a rising senior at Horace Mann School. He lives in the Bronx.
• Kofi Adu, a rising senior at Deerfield Academy. He lives in the Bronx.
• Kwaku Kessey-Ankomah Jr., a rising senior at Cardinal Hayes High School. He lives in the Bronx.
• Sebastian Galvin, a rising senior Proctor Academy. He lives in Norwalk, Connecticut.

“I’m proud to be an AT&T scholar because I met a lot of wonderful people and it’s an honor to represent them,” said Sebastian Galvin, a rising senior Proctor Academy. “To be surrounded by people with similar mindsets as myself in the Summer Intensive, and being able to relate to them as fellow young men of color is truly a gift in and of itself.”

AT&T awarded All Star Code $100,000 through AT&T Aspire, the company’s signature initiative that drives innovation in education to support student success in school and beyond. Through Aspire, AT&T has invested in several innovative education organizations, tools and solutions and engaged its employees through student mentorship.

Meet the New Class of All Stars!

We are thrilled that the 2015 Summer Intensive has officially launched this week! Microsoft NY and Alley NYC will host 40 All Stars over the next six weeks.

Of the 40 students in this year’s program, 31 students are local to New York City – representing Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan. The other 9 students come from New Jersey, Virginia, Arizona, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maryland, representing 7 states in total. More than half of the students identify as African-American/Black, over a quarter identify as Latino, and 10% identify as Asian or Other.

As part of our #techspeakerseries, students will hear from leaders in the New York City tech industry. All Stars will also visit tech offices, such as Dropbox, Yelp!, and YouTube. By the end of the 6-week program, students will have learned 1 college semester level of computer science including exposure to physical computing, robotics, and web applications. They will have built at least 1 video game, 2 mobile web applications, and 1 physical computing device (a toy memory game). The Summer Intensive will culminate with Demo Day hosted at Google, where teams will present their final projects.
