Christina Lewis Halpern – Founder & Executive Director
Christina Lewis Halpern is a social entrepreneur and award-winning journalist who is the Founder and Executive Director of All Star Code, a unique, fast-growing non-profit education organization that attracts, prepares and places more young men of color in the technology sector. The White House honored Christina as a 2014 Champion of Change for STEM Access. She is also a Jet Magazine top 40 under 40 and The Root’s 17 women in STEM you should know. She has spoken at NY Ideas, Harvard Law School, The Atlantic Forum in Education, J.P. Morgan, the Wealth and Giving Forum, among other places. She is also chair of the Finance and Investment Committee of the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation and has led million-dollar fundraising campaigns for her alma mater, Harvard College. Prior to founding All Star Code, Christina was an award-winning journalist, including five years as a staff writer for the Wall Street Journal. Her work has been profiled in Fortune, Fast Company, Domino, and Vanity Fair and she has been published in The New York Times Magazine and other publications. Christina Licata – Head of Operations & Development - Christina developed a passion for connecting people with nonprofits while working and volunteering at various educational organizations in New York City. Taking her work from the ESL classroom to the front lines of philanthropy, Christina has raised awareness and financial support for educational and athletic causes for over seven years. She graduated with a B.A. in English and Italian from Arizona State University. After transplanting to Brooklyn from Tempe, Arizona, Christina co-founded the New York Lady Magpies Australian Football team and currently serves as the head coach. Amanda Greenberg – Special Projects Manager - Amanda graduated from Union College in 2012, where she majored in Sociology and further developed her passion for helping underrepresented populations strive to reach their potential. After graduation, through a fellowship, she spent 10 months living in Cambodia, where she taught English at an NGO school for former street- working children and worked closely with the school’s two affiliated businesses. After returning to the U.S, she worked for a civil litigation law firm and for a female empowerment nonprofit. Alberto Tornés – Community Manager – Alberto is a social entrepreneur, with experience in forging strategic partnerships between the non-profit and for-profit sector in order to drive high-impact solutions to pressing societal issues. Prior to joining All Star Code, Alberto worked at AID FOR AIDS International as its Development and Communications Manager, planning and executing various fundraising and marketing campaigns. Additionally, Alberto co-founded StartUp Cuba, an initiative that provides emerging Cuban entrepreneurs with experiential learning and mentoring opportunities. A graduate of Fordham University, Alberto is firmly committed to serving high-needs communities and deeply motivated by the opportunity to improve lives through advocacy and support. Contact Alberto.
Michael Schwartz – Director, Events-Michael has created, directed, or consulted on events and productions for various schools and education non-profits including P.E.N.C.I.L., Challenge Success/Stanford University, The University of Southern California, and Yale University. He has taught at Stagecoach Theatre Arts School in New York and has developed a theatre festival with MFA candidates at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. Michael is also a professional photographer and theatre maker, having directed shows regionally from Los Angeles to London, and assisted on productions at Lincoln Center and on Broadway. Daniel Nunez – Program Manager - Dan was born and raised in The Bronx, NY. He graduated from Syracuse University in 2015 with a degree in Information Studies. During his time there he was a part of multiple organizations such as Raices and Phi Iota Alpha fraternity Inc. Raices Dance Troupe was a Hispanic dance group that seek to enrich the Syracuse community through dance workshops and performances. As Director of Programming for Phi Iota Alpha, Dan was able to fundraise over 20,000 dollars to their philanthropy, UNICEF in 2 years. Before joining All Star Code he worked as an Associate Analytics Consultant for LPA Software Solutions in Buffalo, NY where he was a certified Cognos Analytics Report Author. His current interest and hobbies are sports, fitness, music, art and film. Ankita Suri - Program Manager - Ankita graduated from CUNY Baruch College in 2011 with a BA in Political Science and Sociology. During college, she interned at non-profits in NYC and New Delhi and forged a commitment to philanthropy and working in civil society. Before All Star Code, Ankita worked at the Open Society Foundations where she worked as a Program Specialist, developing international scholarship programs for human rights activists from closed countries. Kasia Szymanska - Operations Manager - Kasia Szymanska, a Polish Chicagoan, received her B.A. in History from DePaul University in 2013. Upon graduation Kasia joined Teach for America (’13), and taught seventh-great social studies at a turn-around charter school in Indianapolis. She simultaneously earned an M.A. in Teaching from Marian University in Indianapolis (’15). Encouraged by the need for additional supports for students and teachers she witnessed in Indianapolis, Kasia joined Citizen Schools and served as a Deputy Campus Director at a middle school in the Bronx. Kasia is thrilled to bring her passion for closing the opportunity gap into an organization as driven as All Star Code! Anny Fang – Learning Manager - Anny was born in Taiwan and (partially) raised in Canada. She developed a passion for education and research during her undergraduate years at University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. To further pursue her passion, Anny recently graduated with a MS in Statistics and is expecting to receive her PhD in Human Development & Cognitive Studies in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University by the end of 2016. On a less serious note, Anny enjoys extreme hobbies. This means that you may see her reading a book in an obscure café or bungee-jumping in a third-world country. She is also fascinated with poetry, comics, science fiction, and anything that does not include boo-boo kitty eyes or predictable love-triangle plots. Mahdi Shadkamfarrokhi – Curriculum Manager - After focusing his studies on bioinformatics at New York University, Mahdi has continued to expand his programming repertoire to more than research analysis. While gaining skills such as exploratory data analysis, forming predictive models, and creating data products, he has enriched young minds by teaching them programming basics. At the same time, Mahdi has worked closely with administrators and teachers to help create a coding curriculum as well as the pedagogical model it’s based on. On the weekends, Mahdi enjoys farming, beekeeping, and cooking, and can often be found making silly Scratch projects, challenging his skills on codewars.com, or working on the much anticipated “Beekeeping App”. David Noel – Outreach & Recruiting Consultant - David Noel, Jr. was born and raised in White Plains, New York, and graduated from Manhattanville College in 2013 where he studied Classical Piano, Psychology and Philosophy. Looking back on his high school and collegiate experience, David was excited at the prospect of “”paying it forward”” by helping young men of the African Diaspora make decisions that speak to future success. Linda Ashfield – Finance Consultant – Linda Ashfield has worked in the financial management sector for many years. Most recently, she was the Director of Finance and Administration for A Better Chance, Inc., an organization whose mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society. Prior to that, Linda was the CFO for a private company who designed educational print publications. Linda has an MBA in Accounting and now consults with a number of clients through her own company, LM Ashfield, Inc. and her collaboration with Kiwi Partners, Inc. Linda is committed to furthering the mission of All Star Code through the maintenance of best-practice financial management processes and sound financial oversight via Kiwi Partners. Contact Linda.
Hunter Massey – Finance Intern – Hunter is currently enrolled in Baruch College and is majoring in Finance. Previously, he has worked for non-profits such as the 92nd Street Y as a STEM ambassador. This is where he developed his love for non-profit companies and giving back to the community. Growing up, he was enrolled in similar non-profit programs that helped low income minorities pursue higher levels of education and he will use his direct experience to help All Star Code however he can. Jori Holloway – Development & Marketing Intern – Jori was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She currently attends Yeshiva University where she double majors in Marketing and Finance. Prior to college, she studied abroad in Israel, France, Belgium, Germany and Poland. While in Israel, she was a member of the Israeli Defense Force. Jori most recently worked at WayUp.com where she planned and organized events as well as guerrilla marketing campaigns to promote the brand face-to-face and via social networking.
