Join the Team

Help students start tech careers and keep advancing in them.

All Star Code is a workforce development organization. Our year-round staff and summer instructors teach code as one part of that work. The larger job is preparing students for a first tech role and giving them the skills and network to keep advancing in their careers.

Why join

Our work is only as good as our team.

The Summer Intensive is where a student becomes a Scholar, and the instructional team runs those six weeks. Instructors teach the technical curriculum, coach students on the professional skills employers expect, and prepare them to present their work to industry professionals. Some Scholars return years later as instructors, mentors, and hiring partners. Year-round staff run the rest of Launching Digital Futures, which supports students and Scholars from first exposure to computer science through a first job and the career after it.

Paid training

Every instructor completes Professional Development Week before the summer begins: up to 40 hours of paid training on our curriculum and classroom management.

Weekly calls and feedback

You join a weekly call with the curriculum team and the other instructors and receive regular feedback on your teaching and classroom management.

Our network

Staff join the same network as our Scholars, mentors, and partners. Teaching Fellows are Scholars who return to teach the Summer Intensive.

Summer Intensive roles

The summer instructional team

Each Summer Intensive cohort is taught by a Lead Instructor, a Teaching Assistant, and a Teaching Fellow, with a Summer Intensive Coordinator responsible for core skills and partner programming. All four roles are full-time and seasonal.

Lead Instructor

Run the classroom and the team

You teach our technical curriculum from daily lesson plans you write and submit for review. A Teaching Assistant and a Teaching Fellow report to you. You also run assessments and track student progress, and you lead the team's work on Student Orientation and Demo Day.

You bring: a degree in computer science, a related STEM field, or education (or equivalent experience) and proficiency in at least ten of the skills listed below.

Teaching Assistant

Co-teach and support students

You co-teach two virtual classrooms of 25 or more students, lead the technical lesson at least once a week, and cover for the Lead Instructor when needed. You also hold office hours, debug code with students, resolve hardware and software problems, and grade the weekly milestones.

You bring: at least two college-level computer science courses (or equivalent experience) and proficiency in at least seven of the skills listed below. Teaching experience is preferred.

Teaching Fellow

Teach the program you completed

Teaching Fellows are Scholars. You teach alongside the Lead Instructor and Teaching Assistant and share responsibility for weekly reports.

Summer Intensive Coordinator

Lead core skills and partner programming

You co-teach our core skills curriculum with the Lead Instructor and keep students informed about partner programming. You also handle escalated behavior issues with the instructional team.

Technical skills we look for

HTML and CSS, JavaScript, the command line, website development, object-oriented programming, responsive websites, front-end development, back-end development, the DOM, event handlers, test-driven development, APIs, asynchronous programming, Git and GitHub, and databases.

Time commitment

What we expect

What we look for in every instructor

  • You conduct yourself professionally with partners, funders, families, press, and tech executives.
  • You adjust to how each student learns and keep the class on task.
  • You give clear feedback and act on the feedback you receive.
  • Your work reflects our three pillars: Dare Greatly, Celebrate Failure, and Tell Your Story.
